A Journey of Passion and Progress: The Legacy of Music City's Executive Director

Mike Webb, outgoing Music City Youth in the Arts Executive Director

In the world of drum corps, few names resonate with as much dedication and impact as Music City Youth in the Arts. At the heart of this thriving organization is Mike Webb, whose journey from a soprano bugle player with the Madison Scouts in 1984 to the Executive Director of Music City has been marked by passion, resilience, and a commitment to positive progress.

A Transformative Beginning

Mike Webb's connection to drum corps began in 1984 when he marched with the Madison Scouts, playing the soprano bugle. "I can’t think of another experience that shaped me more into who I am today," he reflects. Although he pursued a business career, his love for the marching arts never waned. This passion was rekindled when his oldest daughter became involved in the activity. It was through new acquaintances that Mike was introduced to Music City in 2008, during its inception. His journey with Music City began on the board of directors, where he served as president and later as treasurer. In 2021, he transitioned into an operational role and eventually took on the mantle of Executive Director in November 2022.

Driving Passion and Achievements

"Friendships introduced me to Music City and the passion for the activity drove me to get involved," Webb shares. This involvement has seen countless achievements, but the most significant is the impact on the youth. "The biggest achievement is looking back at the thousands of youth we have interacted with through educational clinics, audition camps, and corps membership. They make it all worthwhile."

In 2018, Music City launched "Drums Across the Smokies", a Tennessee-based drum corps show that began at Farragut High School before moving to Sevier County High School in Sevierville, TN. "I’ve really enjoyed leading the Music City team in running the show and bringing drum corps back to east Tennessee," Webb says with pride.

Challenges and Progress

Music City has faced its share of challenges, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, which had a significant financial impact. Rebuilding a strong sense of community amidst personnel changes was another hurdle. Yet, under Webb's leadership, the Music City Youth in the Arts organization has seen a remarkable transformation. Music City has shifted from operating as a booster club to running a business, emphasizing participant health and wellness and building a strong board of directors.

Innovations and Future Vision

Webb emphasized the evolution of drum corps, specifically noting the every-increasing level of creativity. Off the field, he has seen greater support and transparency among member organizations and the DCI team. However, significant challenges remain. "Music City, like all other drum corps, faces challenges in two primary areas: Finances and Risk, with rising costs of the activity driving up participation fees.

Despite these challenges, Webb's vision for Music City remains unwavering. "Seeing young and reluctant students grow their skillset, develop as productive members of a community, and bonding together in the support of one another no matter the circumstances," he says, is what makes the effort worthwhile.

A Servant Leader’s Legacy

Mark Garey, a founding board member, echoes the sentiments of many who have worked with Webb. "I think the way Mike handles people within our organization would be the memorable experience that I will take away with him. In Board meetings, he was always very calm, well prepared and was always very open to suggestions," Garey recalls. Webb's open and welcoming nature has left a lasting impact on members, staff, parents, and volunteers alike.

Garey continues, "Mike is very loyal and dedicated to his task as Executive Director of MCYA. I always thought he put the organization first and himself second. He has an incredible work ethic; he had no problem getting the job done no matter how dirty or clean it was or hard or easy." Webb's dedication and willingness to tackle any task, glamorous or not, set a powerful example for all.

Webb's financial acumen and strategic vision have also been pivotal. "His management of our finances, the budget he would construct each year and making sure that we worked within those guidelines," Garey highlights. Notably, Webb's efforts in securing grants, such as the Metro Arts grant and the Predators grant, have been crucial for the organization's stability and growth.

Sam Mitchell, a chart member of Music City Drum Corps, highlights Webb's deep care for the members. "He truly cares about the members and their experience. He understands the lifelong impact the organization and its activities have on all involved and wants the highest possible level of enrichment for each and every young person," Mitchell shares. This sentiment underscores Webb's commitment to providing meaningful and enriching experiences for all members.

Cindy Franco Sawyer, operational staff and former board member, praises Webb's dedication and service. "In the time that I’ve known Mike, his dedication, service, and voice of reason made a significant impact to the organization and the staff’s ability to perform to the best of their abilities. On top of that, his sense of humor lightens up even the toughest situations," Sawyer says. This blend of professionalism and approachability has endeared Webb to everyone he has worked with.

Brad Love, Board President, adds his appreciation: "We are extremely honored by the passion and servant heart of Mike Webb. Through his many years of involvement in a multitude of important roles within Music City Youth in the Arts, Mike has played a significant role in developing the foundation of our mission to positively impact young people's lives. We look forward to Mike's continued involvement supporting the amazing community of young people we are blessed to serve. Thank you, Mike Webb, for paying these gifts forward!"

Chaz Bledsoe, Corps Director and former board member, underscores Webb's dedication. "Mike’s partnership and willingness to jump in to help, no matter the task, have been invaluable. His fiscal responsibility ensured that we always operated within our means, setting a strong financial foundation for the future. We wish Mike all the best and look forward to seeing him continue as a volunteer with the corps. His dedication and presence will always be cherished," Bledsoe shares.

A Special Thanks to Becki Webb

The success of Music City is not only due to Mike Webb's efforts but was also significantly supported by his wife, Becki Webb, who served as the organization's bookkeeper. Becki's meticulous attention to detail and unwavering support has been instrumental in maintaining the financial health of the organization. Her contributions behind the scenes have ensured that Music City could continue to thrive and grow. "We forever owe Mike and Becki Webb a debt of gratitude," Brad Love emphasizes, recognizing the duo's collaborative impact on Music City.

Future Outlook and Continued Involvement

As Webb transitions from his role as Executive Director to a volunteer, his commitment to the organization remains steadfast. "This activity gets into your DNA and pulls you in where an extra set of hands are always a blessing. I plan to be around Music City for a long time to come," he assures.

Looking ahead, Garey is optimistic about the future, thanks to Webb's foundational work. "As a founding member of this organization, I don't think we would be where we are today without Mike. I think we are on the verge within the next 3-5 years of some great things in the organization. Because of his work and vision that he has put us in," Garey asserts.

Webb leaves a powerful message for the future leaders of Music City: "My challenge and encouragement to the Music City administration and board of directors is to remember why we do this crazy activity in the first place. It’s for the membership, auditionees, and youth participants we serve. Continue to operate daily within the bounds of the MCYA Vision and Mission Statements as well as the core values: Belonging, Openness, Learning, and Determination."

As Mike Webb steps into a new role, his legacy of servant leadership and his dedication to fostering a supportive, innovative, and resilient community at Music City will continue to inspire and guide the organization for years to come.
