MCYA New Board Members

Two professionals with a strong connection to the marching arts who work in human relations, accounting and law are the newest members of the board of directors at Music City Youth in the Arts, Inc.

The board appointed Kim Dedmon of College Grove, Tenn. and Matthew Carter of Charlotte, NC to join its governing body during the group’s July 11 meeting.

“I am passionate about the marching arts after watching my children participate,” Dedmon said. “The changes I have seen have made me understand how important this activity is for all youth. Music City literally changed all our lives for the better.”

Dedmon is a manager in the Federal Contracts Division for Deloitte and holds both a master’s of accountancy and a law degree.

“I believe my background as an attorney and my immersive experience with marching arts has given me a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities organizations such as MCYA face,” she said.

Carter is returning to the organization after serving in 2013 as the Drum Major for the Music City Drum Corps.

“I understand how Music City makes a difference in the lives of members and fosters a family atmosphere that far exceeds many other similar organizations,” Carter said. “I hope to help provide greater equity in opportunities to participants and increase the inclusion of diverse voices at all levels.”

Carter is a human relations analyst currently working for the Cedar Fair Entertainment Company. His professional and personal focus area includes issues of diversity, equity and inclusion.

“The support structure of MCYA empowers members to be authentic without fear of judgement,” he said. “I know from experience that empowerment at a young age sets a foundation for individuals long after they’ve left the marching field.”

Dedmon and Carter will begin their respective three-year terms with the board effective immediately.

“We are honored to welcome Kim and Matt and include their perspectives and experience while we advance Music City’s mission,” said MCYA Board President Chris Carroll. “I’m confident everyone served by MCYA programs will benefit from their insights and leadership.”

Music City Youth in the Arts provides experiential education in music and visual performance arts to young people through an immersive program emphasizing camaraderie, fitness and leadership development.
